Science and Mathematics Spring 2020 Colloquium Series

A Chemist’s Adventures in the Periodic Table

Speaker: Keith Kostecka, Associate Professor, Science and Mathematics, Columbia College Chicago

Abstract:

While at our college, my work has been in chemical history and the analysis of metals through Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS).  I also have written a biography on the chemist Morris William Travers.

These efforts have had me to research the elements Americium (Am), Krypton (Kr), Neon (Ne) and Xenon (Xe) and most recenty Astatine (At).  Another area has involved the instrumental analysis via Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) of: a variety of foodstuffs for Calcium (Ca) content; samples of Gatorade for levels of Potassium (K); a variety of lettuce cultivars for Cadmium (Cd) content as well as investigating the phytoremediative ability of Brassica Rapa for Cd.
