Columbia College Chicago

From Paper to Practice: Tactics and Publics in Socially Engaged Art

College Art Association Annual Meeting, Chicago
*Admission to conference is required

Panelists: Melissa Potter (chair), Jessica Cochran, Stuart Keeler, Claire Pentecost & Laura Anderson Barbata

Artists working in the social realm engage creative practice in the spirit of urgent social transformation. In projects such as community gardens and bookmaking with indigenous tribes of the Amazon, Social Paper, an exhibition on view at the Center for Book & Paper Arts during the 2014 CAA Conference, places the art of hand papermaking in a broader theoretical and historical landscape by considering medium specificity as a tactic of social engagement.  This panel of artists, critics and curators address some of the central concerns of social practice including labor, environment, activism, and pedagogy while creating a new context for evolving scholarship in the field of craft arts and interdisciplinary practice.
